So there you go. Phew. Let me know just how strongly you disagree. Don’t waste time commenting on how much of a fucking sad geek I am, though. I already know...

Love to all

Thank you so much for putting this list together James. I look forward to this list! Even though I've know you for 3 years - I have tried and failed to share your enthusiasm for prog rock bands and some of your tastes in metal. But I trust and respect your list - I'll probably end up buying half of these albums based on your analysis!

My initial observations - its refreshing to see a brit shit on the kings of leon and radiohead! (gasp!)- I loved because of times at first - but its ultimatley become a dissapointment as the year wore on.

Against Me! does have some great lyrics and rousing anthems - but crowning it the best of the year (as many music outlets have) is more of comment on 07' being a shit year for music I think more than anything.

Foo Fighters?! Really? And the Pretender being your single of the year? I want to love the Foo's but their music has been painfully mediocre to my ears over the last two records.

I'm intrigued by shitdisco, silverchair, maximo park, and the john butler trio.

Some of my favs Eddie Vedder's "Into the Wild" soundtrack - brilliant. And the Hive's Black and White album.

will talk more soon!

A few comments on the list that came to me via email:

TOM:
"Hmmmm... Kaiser Chiefs, Babyshambles, Arctic Monkeys? Is this a list of top saturday morning kids TV show groups? Is it the Just-17 magazine december issue free cover CD tracklist? I advise checking behind the sofa... see if you can find the self-respect that you obviously misplaced! Only kidding mate, it's good to there's ridiculously wide range of music beyond that in my own personal sphere. Good to hear that Machine Head are on form, may have to check that one out at some point... and I was most surprised to see that Silverchair are in there... thought they'd folded by the time they'd hit puberty (they did hit puberty right?)!I've been trying to think whether I bought any new music albums in the last year... and other than the fantastic Boxcutter album 'Glyphic' I'm pretty sure everything else was 'old' music (a number of re-issues of albums by The Alan Parsons Project spring to mind, along with some old rave records!). Wait a minute... I reckon the Tea album may have been the top record of the year, though I'd paid for it in time rather than money, and due to laziness on the part of the performers it's still not quite finished!"

CATHERINE:
"Babyshambles over Bright Eyes? Surely some mistake."

NIXON:
"hmm, interesting. I can only presume you are not aware of the following:

- panda bear: person pitch

- battles: mirrored

- deerhoof: friend opportunity

- akron/family: love is simple

- mum: go go smear the poison ivy

- tunng: good arrow

- do make say think: you, you’re a history in rust

- caribou: andorra

to name just these!

some of these possibly too folky/weirdy for your taste… agree by the way that oceansize album very disappointing (saw them live in oxford which was ok however). radiohead album not their best but an important album because of release channel."

James - I could write a long, rambling message about your list, but I think I'll save most of it for when I see you.

A brief summary of my thoughts would be: Arcade Fire probably should be a least number 1, and it's only that and CWK we would share in our lists. Apart from that, I'm disappointed that Bright Eyes ain't in, as well as Modest Mouse, Interpol, The National and The Shins.

Comments better left unsaid are my views on Maximo Park, Bloc Party and the Foos - and I won't say that I agree with Adam's list a lot more, but... However, well done, twas fun to read, and I'm glad you made the time.
